Dr. Shawn Gutman graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering. Feeling unfulfilled as an engineer, he changed his career path to dentistry and attended Columbia University College of Dental Medicine. After graduating with his DDS, he decided to specialize in orthodontics and stayed at Columbia to complete his three-year residency training. As a resident, Dr. Gutman was awarded the Thomas Cangialosi Award for clinical excellence. He finds that orthodontics is the perfect amalgamation of mechanical engineering and dentistry; it is a career in which he can utilize both of his educational backgrounds.
Dr. Gutman also holds a part time clinical faculty appointment at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine where he teaches the current residents. He is an active member of the American Association of Orthodontics. When Dr. Gutman is not perfecting his patients’ smiles, he is busy with his aquariums at home. He is an avid aquascaper and freshwater shrimp breeder.
